We wondered why we keep selling out of dried mealworms and other wild bird food so we had a look about. We couldn’t believe the prices other shops are charging. PAH are charging over twice as much as us for 500g bags of dried mealworms! How a large company like that, with much better buying power than little old us can justify it is beyond me. Anyway, here are some examples of price comparisons. Please note; these are not special offers or discounted lines, just our regular prices.
Not quite sure why anyone would drive all the way out to these facelss chainstores when you can get it cheaper in an independant local shop, the power of multi million pound advertising campaigns I suppose and I guess there is the reason for the hicked prices.
Plastic carrier bags are going from Angell Pets very soon so we can do our bit to reduce the amount of plastic finding its way into the environment.
We have been trying to figure out how to reduce the use of plastic bags in our shop for a while now. There are only two effective ways to do this:-
1) To charge for the bags to encourage customers to bring their own re-usable bags or
2) Get rid of them completely and try an alternative.
We have chosen to go with option number 2, although this will actually cost us more! Once our current stock of plastic bags has run out we will not be getting any more in.
We didn’t want to start charging for bags as this would cause disagreements at the till, with some customers not wanting to pay as it is not yet law for small shops and in any event we would still be giving out the plastic bags.
Instead will be providing small paper bags (one per transaction). Paper bags actually cost us quite a lot more. For example a decent paper bag (shown) costs us around 8-9p each, where as the same size plastic bag costs us 1-2p. However the paper bags we can provide are not very large so we are asking customers to help us reduce non recycleable waste by bringing your own “bag for life” just like you would do at the super market.
We still have a small stock of plastic bags to use up (may as well get a use out of them; if we hand them out or throw them in the bin they are still going to end up in land fill).
For the time being our 1kg bagged up food will still be in polythene bags until we can find a suitable alternative. We are trialing something but it may take a few goes to get the right product.The product we got in to try this week won’t really work so we will use them for frozen rats and mice instead.
Now we are back in a permanent base we have relaunched our wholesaler’s monthly offers scheme. We are cheaper than Pets at Home and Jolleys for most things anyway but these offers beat on line suppliers too. If you add on the savings you get with our customer loyalty scheme (effectively an additional 2.5% off everything you have bought) it make our prices even more attractive. With FREE car parking and friendly, knowledgable service, why go anywhere else? Don’t forget, if we don’t have what you normally buy in stock we can probably get it. We are a small, independant business and that means we can be extremely flexible with what we stock.
As a bonus for April, we have launched these offers early and they are avaiable in store and on line from today.
Here at Angell Pets we are always looking at ways of helping the environment and helping fellow local businesses wtih new ideas. We were pleased to trial out a new product that was presented to us by a local recycling company, although when it was presented we were still closed for the recent relocation and refurbishment. Since then we have trialled the product with our own animals in store and are happy to report excellent results.
The product is going to be branded as “Nest” bedding. Actually it is so new that the brand name is not finalised but I am asssured this is the front runner. For the time being we are selling it under our own Angell Pets ® brand.
As part of the teabag manufacturing process, a lot of offcut teabag paper is produced, prior to the final teabag pressing and cutting. This paper is very soft and absorbant and has not been treated with any chemicals (or used in teabag testing, so it is not stained with tannins). A local recycling company has the contract for disposing of this waste and was looking for a novel solution. This is when they approached us for our advice on its suitability as an animal bedding. We thought it a good idea and after investigating the contents agreed to give it a try. We have since used all the material we were given for the trial and it has been a resounding success.
Not only is the product a safe animal bedding, suitable for all small mammals, including rats as it is dust free and absorbant but as it is untreated it is readilly compostable. Not only will you be giving your pet an excellent product but you will be helping to prevent this material ending up in landfil and supporting local businesses. Also it is available in larger bags than contemporary products making it much more cost effective. We are selling 1kg bags for £3.59, compared to the nearest product available, Safebed which is £1.09 for approx 90g or £12.11 per kg! It even compares well with other substrate products used for rats, with their sensitive respiratory tracts.

It’s a bit of an odd one this year for Angell Pets as of course the new shop is not open until we have completed the refurbbishment work. This won’t be until the new year now but we are still trading over the telephone and online. Our trading times and deliveries for the Christmase period are below.
Angell Pets opened in 2009 with our first Gloucester pet shop in Abbeymead. We were there for five years but unfortunately had to move when our lease expired and our landlord would not renew it (they wanted the premises for their own business). We took this as an opportunity to expand our business by moving to a larger property by the Gloucester Quays that enabled us to further expand our range and add additional services to our Gloucester pet shop, such as boarding for small animals, birds and reptiles. When we moved in there was a large car park 50m away and things looked good for the future growth of our business.
Unfortunately we did not take into account the determination of Gloucester City Council to drive the small trader out of Gloucester in preference to the large out of town developments. The car park was closed 6 months after we moved in, despite the protestations of small businesses such as ours and the immediate result was a loss of 50% of our takings. We have been unable to get this business back and the frequent cry of “isn’t parking rubbish ’round here” has become like finger nails down a chalk board to us. Despite making large changes and reducing our overheads we are unable to sustain these losses so have got to move. It’s a shame because the premises itself was OK, just now in the wrong location and for other reasons too.
In addition to the parking fiasco, there are other reasons to move our Gloucester pet shop. Customers who follow us on Facebook will be aware of the issues we have had over the last three years with the power here. We have a lot of animals that rely on external heat and oxygenation. When the power goes off, it is a major issue for us and we have to do a lot of work keeping the animals safe and well. In addition we cannot trade without power which just adds to the financial pressure on the business. During the worst outage (14 hours), I had to bring up extra heating and insulation for the reptiles and stay at the shop until midnight, manually stirring the fish tanks to keep them oxygenated, all in the dark. It is 2017 for goodness sake and we have had more power cuts than the winter of discontent (yes, I am old enough to remember that).
Another major issue is the council and police’s inability to keep Gloucester City safe. We have had numerous incidents in the shop and in town whilst posting orders. Staff have been verbally and physically abused and threatened. It is unsafe for me to be absent from the premises as we never know when the next moron (or gang of morons!) is going to come in. Staff have been threatened with everything from spitting to having their throats slit. We have seen a woman outside the shop front beaten to the ground and punched whilst still down (losing teeth!) and no action has ever been taken by the police other than to “move them on”, in fact the operator told us that if I went out to the woman’s assistance I would be arrested. I can’t risk the safety of our staff. Also the level of theft is too high for us to sustain here as well.
So enough of the negatives, now the positive. We are moving again in October and it’s closer to our original customer base. The main thing is that there is ample FREE PARKING. Our new premises is likely to be in Hucclecote. The new location of our new Gloucester Pet Shop is ideal to serve our traditional customer base of Abbeymead and Abbeydale, Matson, Upton, Barnwood, Hucclecote, Longlevens, Churchdown and Brockworth. We will of course be maintaining our FREE LOCAL DELIVERY service for our customers in and around Gloucester, in Cheltenham and in Painswick. Of course our UK wide customers will not be affected by the move at all, other than to have wider choice.
So, onward and upward! Come and see us in our new Gloucester Pet Shop when it opens, even if it is just to have a nosey at the new place. It will take a little while to get everything just the way we want it and initially we may be running the two premises at the same time whilst I spend my nights moving fixtures, fittings and stock across.
The first litter of ferret kits this year was born on 24th of April. Allowing seven weeks for growth and weaning and a few days to collect them from the breeding centre and we will have them available for sale in the shop from 24th June.
Previous seasons kits
We have been breeding ferrets for a long time (50 years in my case!) and due to our reputation for quality and customer service, we know we will sell all of this years kits quite quickly. We already have quite a long waiting list for this years litters.
Ferrets will be sold on a first come first served basis (don’t worry if you are on our list, you will get first refusal) and we will not be reserving any until we have them in the shop. This is so the new owners get to see the kits before making a decision to buy and we can satisfy ourselves that you know how you are going to look after them. Also by then we will have had enough time to be sure that all the kits are fit and healthy.
If you have already contacted us to ask about ferrets and left your number we will contact you as soon as we are in a position to confirm we have what you are looking for.
Please do not call and ask what gender or colour the ferrets are at the moment. We will not even go into the nest until after three weeks (any earlier and the mother could be induced to kill the litter). From that age they will start to be handled and the colours will start coming through and obviously we can check the gender. Until then all I can say is that some have been born, so it is a waste of everyone’s time to call us and ask questions that cannot be answered. We will contact you as soon as we know.
