Change to Angell Pets Opening Times

Since our move to Southgate Street it has become apparent that our customers’ shopping habits are a little different here. Whilst before we had lots of customers at opening and closing times, here we rarely get any customers first thing or many after 5pm. At that same time, different aspects of our business have grown rapidly. For instance, we have a lot more local deliveries than ever before, more web site orders to process and our boarding facility is always fully booked at peak times and even “out of season” we are rarely without at least few visitors.

With all this in mind we are changing the opening hours of our Gloucester pet shop to accommodate these changes in customer habits and better utilise our time. So rather than sit around last thing in the afternoon waiting for closing time to come, we will be closing 1/2 hour earlier so we can get started on the local deliveries in time to complete the round before every one thinks we have forgotten them!

Also we will be opening an hour later each day so that we can use the time to process over night web orders, dispatch those orders, attend to boarders, carry out marketing operations and do all the boring admin stuff we get too busy in the day to do.

There should be little effect on our existing customers as hardly anyone uses us during those times anyway and we can improve the level of service to our home delivery customers and increase capacity for this growing area of our business. The new opening times are as follows:-

Monday 10am – 5.30pm

Tuesday 10am – 5.30pm

Wednesday 10am – 5.30pm

Thursday 10am – 5.30pm

Friday 10am – 5.30pm

Saturday 10am – 5.30pm

Sunday 10am – 4pm

Bank holidays 10am – 4pm

Nothing else is changing. We are still open 7 days a week. We are still open every day of the year except Christmas day, Boxing day and New Years day. We are still doing FREE local delivery to Gloucester, Cheltenham and Painswick, We are still boarding small animals, reptiles and birds, we still offer the same huge range of  quality products. However, since it is me that is doing most of this myself (obviously with the help of the family staff) I have to make the absolute best use of my time possible and delivering service to our customers is more useful than me sitting in the shop, looking out down Southgate Street – as “entertaining” as that can be sometimes!

My apologies if this small change causes any inconvenience (I can’t see it will) but hopefully the extra time will improve service to existing customers and increase capacity further to cater for new ones.

Angell Pets Grain Free Food and Natural Treats for cats

Angell Pets has a tradition of supplying quality natural pet foods, based on the natural diet of the particular animal. We have just increased the range further with the introduction of our own brand APL grain free complete food for cats and natural cat treats.

Cats are obligate carnivores and must eat meat to live a healthy life. The amino acid Taurin is only found in meat and cats must have this in their diet. Therefore healthy cats should be fed a high protein, meat based diet. Have you looked at the ingredients and analysis of your cats food? How much actual meat is in the bag. With some very well known supermarket brands (and virtually all supermarket own brands) the answer is very little. Meat and animal derivatives is not meat. It is whatever is left after you have used the actual meat and the bones and cartilage of the carcass (usually termed “meal”). Often the protein content of the food is made up of wheat or maize gluten (the protein element of grain), a cheap and inferior source of protein, as there is not enough meat protein present.. Angell Pets APL range now includes Turkey grain free, high meat content cat food and high meat content poultry treats. This is alongside our existing, highly popular APL grain free dog foods.

Free delivery schedule

Our FREE local delivery service continues to grow in popularity. So much so that we are delivering to up to 20 customers a night Monday to Friday.

In order to be able to keep this service free we have to be able to do the deliveries ourselves. With our free delivery area covering Gloucester, Cheltenham and Painswick we have reached the limits to what we can achieve in one night. A couple of times now we have not finished the round until 10pm – too late for most customers.

So to keep the times sensible for our customers and to ensure we can complete the rounds we are introducing a delivery schedule for each area  covered. By concentrating the deliveries in smaller areas and not having to drive from Hardwicke to the other side of Cheltenham in one round, we can ensure we get to all our customers and keep the service FREE by not having to employ an outside driver.

The new schedule comes into effect on Monday 14th of September and is as follows.

Monday – GL1, GL3, GL4 and Cheltenham postcodes

Tuesday – GL1, GL2, GL4 and Painswick (and Stroud – £5 charge)

Wednesday – GL1, GL3, GL4 and Cheltenham postcodes

Thursday – GL1, GL2, GL4 and Painswick (and Stroud – £5 charge)

Friday – GL1, GL2, GL3, GL4.

Saturday – No service

Sunday – No service

Bank holidays – No service

This schedule ensures our customers do not have to wait more than two working days for a delivery and is weighted to the areas where most deliveries are. We hope this does not inconvenience any of our customers but it really is a case of the service being a victim of its own success.

Angell Pets staff changes

Angell Pets has some of the most highly qualified and experienced staff of any pet shop. The wide range of experience has been gained over many years from a variety of sources. However you cannot gain the experience we have from remaining in the shop all the time.

George has already gained experience with a range of animals from around the world, having visited China, Thailand, Africa, the Seychelles and Assumption Island and most of Europe. On Sunday he sets off again on a new adventure to New Zealand to work in conservation over there. This follows on from the work he was involved with in 2013/2014 for the Seychelles Island Federation on avian conservation. So with George leaving us for at least a year we have had to have a shift round of staff.

Billie has just completed her business A levels and has now joined us full time on a nationally recognised Level 3 animal care and management apprenticeship scheme. She will be taking over many of the duties of her brother in helping to manage the shop. With Billie in the shop during the week alongside Kim I should now be able to focus on other areas of the business such as marketing, after sales support and other important stuff like writing more care sheets, boarding and deliveries.

Albert has agreed to take over Billies previous duties on Saturdays and Henry continues with his existing hours during the week and on Sundays. Both Henry and Albert are just about to start their A levels.

So despite George jetting off again we will be able to continue as usual, offering all the services we currently offer, such as boarding, free local delivery, nail clipping, qualified advice and one of the widest ranges of pet products in Gloucestershire (and some of the best prices too!).
